Do you have a trophy of some sort you'd like to contribute to the NCC Women's 1-Club Tournament? It seems as if the previous trophy has gone missing, with some thinking it might have been more suitable for the trash heap.
The 1-club event is scheduled for September 16th at 4pm, so there's plenty of time for you to scour the depths of your collectibles to find something that might be suitable. If you think you've got just the right thing, contact Tracy Link.

First Look At New Article About NCC

Business Jet Traveler magazine is publishing an article about Northland Country Club in its next issue; the article is written by Bradley Klein, senior writer for GolfWeek magazine, who recently visited the course for the second time in just over a year. As you'll see and read, Klein has some very nice things to say about Northland.
The magazine has sent along these first proofs which we're posting for you to look over. Just click the images to expand them to full screen. These first pages are a little fuzzy - we'll clear those up when the final article is published.
This is the second national magazine to recently feature an article about Northland. You can scroll down to see an article about the club that was in the July issue of Club & Resort Business magazine.

Northland Hosts Ross Society - NCC Wins Golf Competition - Hole In One During Matches

Members of the Donald Ross Society from across the United States got their first real look at Northland Country Club this afternoon on a weather day that was reminiscent of either Ireland or Scotland...but typical of a day in Duluth as well.
The team assembled among Northland member
s (top photo) was victorious in the match play event held this afternoon, winning seven of the ten matches.Despite the blustery conditions, everyone agreed it was a great day on a great golf course. This was the final stop for the society members on their outing in Minnesota - members played earlier in the week in the Twin Cities at Woodhill, Minikhada and White Bear Lake.
Northland congratulates Ross Society member David Jongleux of Indiana for his hole-in-one on the fifth hole during today's competition. The par 3 was playing just 118 yards today, but with a northwest wind gusting to 20 miles per hour or more, most players, including Jongleux, were hitting an 8-iron from the right-side tee box.
Following the golf outing, society members and Northland members attended a banquet in the Donald Ross Room in the clubhouse.During the pre-banquet festivities, Northand Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh, (second from left above) was rewarded for his low-net score of 71 in the competition. It was generally agreed that today's pin positions presented Chris with an unfair advantage...but he accepted the accolades and prize money, nevertheless. Chris is standing next to Ross Society President Gerry Stratford (in plaid vest) who was extremely complimentary of Northland and the other Ross-designed courses in Minnesota during his comments to the dinner guests.
Northland thanks all members of the society who traveled great lengths to be with us for three days. This really is quite an honor and something for which we should be extremely proud. Our membership has embraced the Ross Society by becoming active members of the organization. To learn more about the group - and, to become a member - here's a link to the society website. We urge you to consider becoming one of the 500 plus members of this great group dedicated to honoring the memory of Donald Ross.

Northland thanks the members of the two teams for scheduling this annual event with us....we congratulate the winners and all participants and hope to see you back again in 2010. What a great event...we're so pleased to serve as your host course.

Caddie Banquet - Caddie Of The Year

The annual Northland Caddie Banquet was held tonight - a chance for the young men and women who provide their services through the year to be recognized for their efforts and contributions.
Northland members donated more than $3000 in prizes and merchandise to this year's event, the highest dollar amount ever.
More than 80 young men and women turned out for caddie duty this season, with close to 50 regularly showing up at the course to assist members who desire their services.
Each season, an award is presented to one of the caddies for outstanding service - this year's Caddie of the Year Award was presented to Cale Carlin. The 16-year old is completing his 5th year of service at Northland. Cale, who will be a junior at East High School, is shown with Caddie Master Dan Mosley, who leaves Northland tomorrow for his senior year of college. Cale is active in sports, playing hockey, soccer and golf.
We thank Cale and Dan, and all the young men and women for their great service this season.

Brooming? It's All About Grooming

Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh offers an explanation on his blog about one of his latest attempts to improve playability. Here's how the story begins:

If asked, many of you would probably be able to list a number of tasks required to groom golf course playing surfaces. One task of which you may not be aware is that of brooming. Brooming is just what the name says, the pulling of a broom over the turf before mowing. Brooming, in one form or another, has been around since the very beginning of turfgrass management. Early greenkeepers on the links of the UK used handmade brooms to remove worm castings and work topdressing into the canopy of the soil. While brooming on golf courses is far from a new practice its use in grooming playing surfaces has really began to gain popularity in the last decade.

Northland Receives Attention For Social Media

A story highlighting Northland's efforts to inform members through this blog site and our Facebook page appeared in a recent issue of a national magazine. As a result of the article, we've been contacted by several other private clubs interested in expanding their outreach to members, and by a few other magazines wanting to highlight our social media efforts. We'll post links to those sources as they become available.

Invitational Results: Moline Wins In 19 Holes - Skorich Wins Senior Title

The 84th Northland Invitational Golf Tournament is in the record books - Dan Moline came from behind to beat Ray Peterson on the 19th hole of their sudden death playoff. Earlier in the day, Peterson had gone 20 holes with Dan Luther to get into the finals.
Peterson, shown getting ready to hit his approach shot to #16 from near the woods on the right hand side of the fairway, had a 1-up lead at the time, fighting back from three down at one point. Peterson's shot was long, but he was able to get up and down for four. Moline hit his approach from 120 yards to just above the hole but missed the 10 foot birdie putt.
On #17, Peterson's tee shot came up short. Moline hit his tee shot in the front right bunker. Moline was first to play and was able to get up and down for this three. Peterson's chip came up about 7 feet short, but he was able to make the putt to halve the hole and went to 18 still 1-up.
Peterson split the fairway with his drive on #18, but left himself just under 200 yards to the hole. Moline hit one of his longest drives of the day, outdriving Peterson by nearly 80 yards. Peterson's approach came up short. Moline his approach to the green and is seen in the photo running up the hill to the green to mark his ball. Peterson lost the hole and it was on to sudden death.

Both players hit decent drives at #1. From about 150 yards out in the middle of the fairway, Moline was first to play and hit his shot fat, leaving him with a third shot to the green. Peterson was able to hit his approach to the back left of the green, leaving him with about 35 feet. Moline's third shot ended up just below the hole, about 8 feet away to save his par.
Peterson's putt across the green came to rest about 6 feet above the hole. As he waited, Moline was able to convert and it was Peterson's turn. The putt from above the hole narrowly missed, and it was over with Moline the winner.
For Moline, this marks his second Invitational crown, winning his first in 2006.

In the Senior Championship, Duke Skorich, the 2005 winner, got by 2007 winner Jim Abelsen 4 & 3.

Pairings Set For Championship Flights - Scoring Average of 77.03 in Championship Flight - All Members Invited To Friday Banquet

The final pairings have been set for the championship flights in the regular and senior divisions of the Northland Invitational.....complete pairing sheets are available at the pro shop.
Play beings at 7:30 Saturday morning.
There was some great play on the golf course today. Most players admitted the course setup was extremely fair - although some of the scoring in each of the divisions was not indicative of the setup. The scoring average for the regular division was just over 77.
Three former Invitational champions are still in contention in the regular division of 32 players, including Scott Anderson (2002), Dan Moline (2006) and Reed Kolquist (2007).
Play in the Senior Division begins at 12:30. Five former champions are in the field of 16 finalists, including defending champion Bruce Wagner, Jim Abelsen (2007), Ron Johnson (2006), Duke Skorich (2005) and John Bonifaci (2003, 2004). Scoring among senior participants in the championship flight was just over 80, although a number of the participants said the elevated scoring was the result of one or two bad holes - some with triples or quads for scores on some holes.
======
Please consider joining the golf participants on Friday night for the Tournament Dinner/Show. All Northland members are invited.
The social hour begins at 6:30 with an imported and domestic cheese display followed by dinner service beginning at 7:30. Prachar Invite Medalist - Whalen Shoots His Age - Playoff In Regular Division - Abelsen Leads Seniors - Multiple Storylines On Day One

The first round of the 84th playing of the Northland Invitational is still underway as of this writing - a four man playoff for the final spot in the regular division is being held before the final 32 players are set for the Championship Flight.
Ross Prachar - who has spent the summer season working in the pro shop - opened play today with an even par 71 to claim medalist honors. A trio of players opened with one over 72's today, including former Invitational winners Dan Moline and Reed Kolquist. Kolquist is fresh off his victory last week at the Arrowhead Invitational. Also opening with a 72 today was Ray Peterson.
In the Senior Division, Jim Abelsen led the way with a 74. Abelsen won the senior crown two years ago. But, the story of the day in the senior group might very well have been the 75 shot by Jerry Whalen of Edina Country Club....Whalen is 75 years old. It's not every day someone shoots their age at Northland, yet alone during qualifying day at the Invitational.
Final pairings for tomorrow's play will be available before 9pm tonight, and we'll have that posting as soon as the results are available.
