Here's another great opportunity for you to enjoy dining at Northland Country Club. Friday Wine Night is the latest addition to our schedule of special evenings. Each Friday, selected bottles of wine will be offered to members at half price. And, Chef Mike Schueller will create a special dining feature to accompany the wine.
Don't forget the other special nights at Northland: Tuesday night is Family Dining night with service beginning at 5pm. Each Wednesday and Thursday you can enjoy beverage and appetizer specials from 5pm to 7pm.
Congratulations to Michael Patterson and Matt Stall, the winners of the Northland Season-Long Four-Ball Match Play Tournament. The pair are seen in the pro shop after their win. This is the second event Matt has won this year. Earlier, he and wife Emily won the season long couples event.
Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh has sent out the following email to members about the date for the course closing.
Plans are for this to be the final week of golf for the 2008 season. The course will remain open through the weekend, and the staff and I will begin covering the greens next Monday. Over the course of the last week or so, the Turfgrass Staff has been preparing the course for the end of the season. If you play this week you will find all course accessories including bunker rakes, tee markers, coolers, etc. have been removed for the season. We are also 2/3 of the way through our winter snow mold spray applications. There is an application remaining on both the tees and fairways. On Thursday we will be blowing out the irrigation system. It is always sort of sad to see the end of a golf season, especially one as successful as 2008 has been. But the Turfgrass Staff and myself are already preparing and getting excited for what we hope will be an even better 2009.
Several new dining features have been introduced to the menu this week at Northland.
On The Lighter Side, there's now a "Duo of Hummus" and "Pumpkin Ravioli."
The Greens now has a "Cannellini Bean, Arugula and Pulpo Salad" for you enjoyment.
The Bunker has added two new features: "Brandy Apple Chicken Sandwich" and "Marinated Vegetable Wrap."
There are also three new entrees added to the Northland Feature menu, including: "Seared Nova Scotia Halibut," "Chicken In A Bath" and "Sixteen Ounce Bone-In Filet."
In addition to the new features, many of the Northland standards are being presented with one or two new twists, there's always seasonal favorites, and please be sure to ask the staff for a description of the nightly "Comfort Feature."
Also, don't forget the seasonal Octoberfest menu which will end on October 31.
Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh has posted some new stories and photos on his blog site. Chris has taken a moment to prepare a new video on the deep-tine aerification that has been completed on the greens at Northland. And, he has several photos of work that has now been finished on the 4th and 9th holes, replacing some of the fescue grass with new sod. You can read both stories here.
The weather didn't fully cooperate - well, in all honesty, it was not very nice out....but the Men's Backward Scramble was held today anyway.
The team of Mike Vandenberg, Bob Neve and Duke Skorich were able to beat the four man team of Matt Cartier, Tom Cartier, Paul Nelson and Bill Juntunen. Despite the weather, there was some great play today with some fantastic shots and unbelievable putts from both teams, including several birdies and an eagle.
=====
There are few days left in the 2008 season. In fact, with the weather forecast calling for highs next week only in the 30's, it's possible many members will play their final round of the year on Saturday. A group will gather at 11am to choose up sides. Are you intererested? Let the pro shop know, or show up at the club around 10:30 to get on one of the teams.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play Northland backwards? Here's your chance. The 2008 Men's Backwards Scramble will be held this coming Friday, October 24.
You can sign up through the golf shop - or show up at Noon for the 12:30 start.
Northland members have been asking whether Family-Style Dining was going to return....the answer is yes. The first of the special Tuesday night menus is posted above. From now until the beginning of the 2009 golf season, members and their families will be able to enjoy a different all-you-can-eat meal each Tuesday night. We've kept the pricing the same - just $15 for adults, $10 for children, with no charge for children under 5 years of age.
Reservations are always encouraged.
Not all Veal is created equal.......while some members might prefer Veal Scaloppine, it's more likely you'd expect Weiner Schnitzel (Breaded Veal Cutlet) with the rest of the German menu. Sorry for the confusion.
The Turfgrass Management staff at Northland has begun some additional tree removal on the golf course. With approval from the Green Committee and the backing of the Board of Directors, trees were removed from between fairways 2 and 16, between fairways 3 and 15, and behind the second green. Both the Green Committee and Superintendent Chris Tritabaugh feel it is important the membership understand the reasons for these removals, and the criteria used to determine removal.
Click here to read the explanation for the tree removal.
Superintendent Tritabaugh has also posted a new slide show showing some before and after images of the areas where trees have been removed. Click here to view the slide show.

Congratulations to Bob Neve for winning the 2008 Match Play Championship at Northland.
Neve beat Mark Carlson Thursday afternoon 5 - 4 to claim this year's individual title.
There is just one match play title to be determined - the season long team event. These matches are only in the semi-final phase.
The winners of the season-long couple's event were determined recently. Congratulations to Matt and Emily Stall for their victory.
It's Thursday...don't forget the new hours for tonight's Happy Hour. Bring a guest or put a group together like some members did last night and enjoy food and beverage specials between 5 - 7pm.
And then, how about staying for dinner to enjoy some of the new Fall menu specials? Quite a few members enjoyed the new entrees last night. More seasonal specials will be added each week.
Some members have asked about the Family Night and whether it will be coming back. The popular Tuesday night event is coming back beginning October 21. We'll be publishing the menu in the next few days. The Family Night will continue through the Fall and Winter season.
Duluth has had an inch of rain in the past two days and Northland is wet. No other way to put it. But with temperatures in the 60's predicted today and, possibly, again tomorrow, it's time for some great Fall golf.
However, because of the wet conditions, golf carts will not be allowed on the course today.
Reconsideration will be given to allowing the carts tomorrow.
The forecast does call for additional rains moving in for the weekend.=====
Don't forget the Wednesday Happy Hour at Northland begins at 5pm tonight. We're on to a new Fall schedule which means Wednesday and Thursday Happy Hour begins at 5pm. There will be food and drink specials both nights.
There have been some inquiries about adding another Happy Hour on Friday nights. Look for an announcement soon.
On a cool and blustery Sunday, Northland Country Club's Challenge Cup team failed to win back the trophy, falling to the team from Ridgeview Country Club by a 18 - 6 margin, and a two-day total of 29 - 11. Today's win by Ridgeview is their fifth consecutive victory and they now lead the series 9 - 3.
Today's play on Ridgeview's course consisted of 18 hole best-ball and singles matches. Northland did not win a single one of the best-ball matches, and won only six of the 16 singles matches.
This year's margin of victory was the widest since the series began in 1997.
To print or view the images full screen, just click them.
The pairings for the opening matches of the 2008 Challenge Cup were announced at 10am this morning. (Click the image above to view it full screen) The Northland and Ridgeview teams will each feature several player changes from last year, with Northland adding seven new players and Ridgview inserting at least three new players from its 2007 team. Among the new Northland players is assistant golf professional Sarah LeClair, the first occasion when a woman has been added to the field of players.
Play will get underway at 9am at Northland. The front nine will be a scramble format with the back nine switching to a true alternate shot format. Each of the nine hole matches will be worth one point.
Play will continue on Sunday morning at Ridgeview. Pairings for Sunday's matches will be announced after the completion of play on Saturday. The matches on Sunday will consist of 18 hole best-ball and singles matches played at the same time. Each of those matches will also be worth one point.
It's time for the annual Challenge Cup matches featuring teams from Northland Country Club and Ridgeview Country Club.
Teams from the two clubs will play a Ryder Cup format on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's play will be at Northland with Sunday's finishing matches at Ridgeview.
As the image above shows, Ridgeview has won the matches four consecutive years and holds an 8 - 3 record since the series began in 1997.
Pairings for this weekend's matches will be announced on Friday.
If there is a full field of eight matches with two man teams, Northland will need 20 1/2 points to win the cup while Ridgeview will need 20 points to retain the trophy.

Dr. English died unexpectedly of natural causes on August 8. Nancy's husband Tom Crook is still a member of Northland.

Northland recently received the following letter from one of our members. It has been edited slightly to preserve the member's identity.
We have been fortunate to have belonged to organizations like Young Presidents Organization and Chaine des Rotisseurs who pride themselves in proving the best dining experience available worldwide. They do that by bringing in the top chefs they can find to design and serve the finest meals and wines to their members.
We have traveled throughout the world and attended those events and also toured on some of the finest cruise lines, and I have to tell you that the meal served us last night was one of the finest meals we have ever had in our lives. The presentation was outstanding and the design of the meal was balanced and unique.
We feel very privileged to have experienced the joy of eating one of your fabulous meals...thanks again.
Wonderful praise for our culinary staff headed by Executive Chef Mike Schueller and Sous Chef John David Martin.
